were the incorrect ones from a UK supplier?

The shorter ones are used with the featherbed frame and referred to as 'short roadholder forks'

This is a common problem on British bikes with a separate gearbox.
The trick is to pull the gearbox back until the primary chain is too tight then adjust the gearbox forward so that the slack is taken out of the links in the right direction.

When I ran Norton ES2 and 650 Panther the book method always worked for me. Flood carburettor, retard ignition, ease over TDC with the decompressor return kick start lever to top and long swinging kick usually gave a 1st or 2nd kick start. Magneto needs to be in good condition with a good purple spark at the plug.

Looks like you are running with a K28 carburettor and the air slide closed.

You did very well with your purchase. Apart from the carburettor and many Allan screws a remarkably original bike. In that condition in the UK it would sell for 3000 pounds Sterling. 1954?

Metric has taken over in the UK And I cannot think of any thing that is still Imperial. Most cars and motorcycles are imported from Europe and Far East. However just to be difficult, as is the English way, weights and measures are Metric but distance is still in miles and we retained the pound Sterling currency.

Negative sides of fine threaded fasteners:
- Fine threads are more susceptible to galling than coarse threads.
- They need longer thread engagements and are more prone to damage and thread fouling.
- They are also less suitable for high-speed assembly since they are more likely to seize when being tightened.


The potential benefits of fine threads are:
- Size for size, a fine thread is stronger than a coarse thread. This is both in tension (because of the larger stress area) and shear (because of their larger minor dia­meter).
- Because of the smaller pitch, they allow finer adjustments in applications that need such a feature.
- Fine threads can be more easily tapped into hard materials and thin-walled tubes.
- Fine threads require less torque to develop equivalent bolt preloads.
- Fine threads have less tendency to loosen since the thread incline is smaller and hence so is the off torque.

Yes, well researched and a good explanation. Broadly speaking, the better quality bikes, AJS, Matchless, Norton, Velocette and others used more fine thread BSC 26TPI fixings to reduce vibration loosening them.

BSA tended to use more cheaper BSF fixings which are a coarser thread probably for cost saving reasons. Having said that I ran BSA singles and twins for a number of years and never suffered loose fixings due to vibration. BSA tended to feed the cheaper end of the Market but were good solid reliable work horses.

You do need less tools when working with the Metric system. I have a large tool box of now rusty Imperial spanners. :(

In the UK it is quite common to find fully rebuilt bikes, some say to better than original, from the 1950's for sale with minimal mileage covered. The conclusion being that the seller also runs a modern bike and has rebuilt an older one from his youth and found it not has he remembers and is disappointed.

An Engineering friend fully rebuilt a Matchless G80 in the 1980's and travelled a lot of Europe two up with a small trailer and covered approx. 100,000 miles. He found a big end would last 50,000 miles and two or three cylinder rebores were required. He road it sensibly and maintained it like an Engineer would.

In the 1950's UK roads were good and cars fewer so it was common for bikes to be used for work and pleasure and big mileages were not uncommon on the likes of BSA B31, AJS/Matchless 350 and Velocette MAC solo or with a sidecar BSA M21. Norton 16H/Big 4.

The last Norton ES2 I acquired had pulled a sidecar for a lot of its life and was very tired and worn out, a complete money pit.

Old and new AJS



The Chinese AJS has been available in the UK for a number of years but is so divorced from the original as not to effect the value or provenance of the real thing. Apparently it is well made and finished.

Its worth mentioning that the AJS company failed in the early 1930's and was bought out by Matchless so the older bike is really not all it seems. Nothing is new.
